Building patient volume through "runway" management.

unways" are not just for airports. At Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMMC) and its subsidiary. Miller Children's Hospital, both of which occupy the same campus in Long Beach, CA, keeping the "runways" clear for patient admissions has increased volumes by more than 160 patients per day and net income by 700 percent. Senior managers, who arc these hospitals' chief "traffic controllers," devised the "runway" plan in late 2002. With census falling below expectations and physicians voicing frustration at admitting processes, the managers rook action. The management team examined three major points of entry for LBMMC, a 541-bed adult hospital, and Miller Children's, a 198-bed pediatric facility: the admitting department, the emergency department, and the processes for transferring back capitated patients who were hospitalized out-of-network. At each they saw major bottlenecks. Working with many hospital departments, they began the process of clearing these three important "runways" to the hospital.

Landing Safety Analysis of An Independent Arrival Runway
The growth of aviation traffic volume and the attempts to increase operational capacity by reducing aircraft spacing make aviation safety an urgent research issue in the aviation community. Simultaneous runway occupancy of landing aircraft is a precursor of a runway collision, and it is an effective of measure of runway landing safety. This paper presents an analytical method to evaluate the pr...
متن کاملPrediction and Control of Departure Runway Balancing at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport
At many airports, aircraft take off from multiple departure runways. During periods of high departure demand, whether or not the departure runways are balanced directly affects the capacity and efficiency of the airport. This paper begins by investigating the cause of runway imbalances. Homogeneity in the direction of flight during a departure push and the procedures for runway assignments are ...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of a Surface Traffic Management Tool for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
This paper presents detailed results from a highfidelity human-in-the-loop evaluation of an airport surface decision support tool. The Spot And Runway Departure Advisor is designed to aid controllers in managing aircraft surface operations and is based on two optimization algorithms: the Spot Release Planner and the Runway Scheduler. The Spot Release Planner provides sequence and timing advisor...
متن کاملRobust Optimization Model for Runway Configurations Management
The Runway Configuration Management problem governs what combinations of airport runways are in use at a given time for an airport or a collection of airports. Runway configurations (groupings of runways), operate under Runway Configuration Capacity Envelopes (RCCEs) which limit arrival and departure capacities. The RCCE identifies unique capacity constraints based on which runways are used for...
متن کاملDesign Principles and Algorithms for Automated Air Traffic Management
Albstract This paper presents design principles and algorithm for building a real time scheduler. The primary objective of the scheduler is to assign arrival aircraft to a favorable landing runway and schedule them to land at times that minimize delays. A further objective of the scheduler is to allocate delays between high altitude airspace for from the airport and low altitude airspace near t...
